CHASING AFTER THE NEST
SIGHT and SMELL
Short essay inspired by Celine’s Eau De Parfum ‘Eau De Californie’.
Chasing After the Nest
A journey into the past, that gifts you the awareness of the present
A classic John Wayne cliché, in a modern key. A dry, sultry, twisted road you’ve never traversed before. A car, too old to have a/c. The radio is playing a song you never thought you’d listen to. The sun feels different to what you’re used to. Sweaty temples, a liquor bottle almost empty on the leather passenger seat. All of a sudden, you’re swept up by the scent of palo santo, a citrusy yet woody smell that gives a purified feeling throwing you back into your past – so different of who you’re now. Nevertheless, rendering your vulnerability and nostalgia. That perfect union you’ve been looking for this whole time, that gifts you awareness. Being far from your homeland, walking away from your nest, is nowadays seen as a priority, something necessary to strengthen and find your own essence. It’s not just about destinations, but the experiences, acceptance and realisation of who you truly are. A far-away journey, which may last several years inevitably changing our endings but keeping our roots constant.
The people we meet, the situations we run into, the sensations we feel, can help us define what, to us, the word ‘nest’ really means.
